Compassion: luxury or necessity?

Spiritual care begins with compassionate healing presence. Since competence in spiritual care is now mandated for all professional caregivers developing the virtue of compassion and the art of compassionate presence are priorities. This chapter will describe efforts to define the compassion undergirding quality of presence and behaviours and explore the question of whether or not compassion is an essential quality for all for all who value spiritual care and the healing it promotes.
