Private and Public Colonisation Schemes in Amazonia

Colonisation schemes in the Brazilian Amazon have been a major force behind social and environmental change in the region since the 1970s (Moran, 1981; Smith, 1982; Fearnside, 1985). Although small-scale colonisation had been taking place for several decades before then, except for the construction of the Belém-Brasília highway and its associated spontaneous colonisation, their character had been small scale and their impact not felt at a regional scale (Tavares et al. , 1972).
