Two kinds of powder mixtures, talc-MgCO3 basic (MCB) and talc-MgO, were ground in air using a planetary ball mill in order to investigate the formation of forsterite in the sintered body. Grinding the mixture of talc-MCB caused the structure to change into amorphous state, while crystalline phases still remained in the ground mixture of talc-MgO. The amorphization of talc-MCB facilitated the formation of forsterite. When the mixture of talc-MgO was used, not only the mean size of MgO particles but also their crystallinity and the specific surface area significantly affected the formation of forsterite in the sintered body.
