Iodinated contrast media agents are some of the most frequently utilized nontherapeutic drugs in hospitals and outpatient facilities today. From the 1980s to the 1990s, utilization of CT scanning increased by 800% with projected increase in CT procedures of 122% from 2002 to 2008.1 More than 62 million CT scans are performed every year in the United States, with more than 50% requiring intravenous (IV) iodinated contrast media.2
