Heparin was grafted into the polymer network of PVA-alginate by using glutaraldehyde as cross-linking agent and hydrochloric acid as catalyst. The appropriate amount of heparin, glutaraldehyde and hydrochloric acid in the reaction were determined. The maximum portion heparin grafted into PVA-alginate was 70%. A series of experiments were done to determine the blood-compatibility of heparin-g-PVA-alginate. Lee-whiteoclotting time was 1 740 sec. and plasma recalification time became longer after heparin was grafted onto PVA-alginate. SEM showed that fibrin network was not found on heparin-g-PVA-alginate after immersing it into human whole blood. Animal experiment showed heparin-g-PVA-alginate had a good tissue-compatibility.
