A new surfactant sodium sulfonate of octadecylamide succinate (SOAS) was synthesised by amidation of succinic anhydride with octadecylamine in cyclohexane solution and then sulfonationg with Na_2SO_3. The optimum reaction conditions were:succinic anhydride/octadecylamine=1.15(mol ratio); amidation temperature,70℃; amidation time, 30 min; sulfonating temperature,70 ℃; sulfonating time,3 h; Na_2SO_3/succinic anhydride=1.10(mol ratio). The yied was more than 90%. The properties of SOAS were measured showing that it had higher foaming capacity and lower degreasant ability.
