摘要
LORD UltraConductive™ spray coatings and films are filled polymeric materials that behave like metals in their ability to conduct electricity and heat, but can be applied as a paint, or by draping as an adhesive film onto composite surfaces for lightning strike protection (LSP). During cure, these materials self-assemble in an efficient manner to produce electrically conductive networks (6-12 m:/sq.) at low areal weights (~ 140g/m2). Such low weight, in combination with the technology's versatility in composite processing has led to qualification of these materials in the past two years by multiple aerospace OEMs. This paper highlights three recent investigations using these materials: 1. Testing of these materials as LSP for thermoplastic composites when applied after laminate consolidation (thermoforming). 2. Methodology and testing supporting Airbus Helicopter's selection of these materials to overcome specific LSP application and processing challenges. They are now considered “breakthrough technology” because of their minimal surface preparation requirements, ease of application, and support of Airbus's environmental goals. 3. Description of how these materials are used to repair damage in thermosetting composites.
