Study of free radical scavenger for the treatment of acute intracerebral hemorrhage

Objective To study the efficacy of free radical scavenger(edaravone)in the treatment of acute intracerebral hemorrhage.Methods 212 patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage were randomly assigned into two groups:102 patients in the treatment group were given edaravone besides routine treatment for 14 days,other 110 patients were treated routinely without edaravone as the control group.Results The improvement of the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS)and activities of daily living scale in the treatment group evaluated at 14th and 28th day were significantly higher than those in the control group(P0.05),but the levels of superoxide dismutase(SOD)and glutathione peroxidase(GSHPx)significantly rised at 3rd and 7th day after the treatment,the levels of NO and lipid peroxide(LPO)in the treatment group were obviously lower than those in the control group(P0.05).There was no the statistical difference in the adverse drug reaction in two groups(P0.05).Conclusion Free radical scavenger(edaravone)is efficacious and safe in the treatment of acute intracerebral hemorrhage due to the improvement of neurological impairment and activities of daily living in the patients.
