Mammalian tissues possess the capacity to synthesize cytidine 3′,5′-monophosphate (cyclic CMP) via the enzymatic conversion of cytidine 5′-triphosphate to cyclic CMP by cytidylate cyclase. Cyclic CMP formation occurs best in the presence of manganese or iron, at neutral p H, at 37°C, in the absence of detergents, and with whole tissue homogenate fractions. Thus, mammalian tissues are capable of synthesizing not only cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP, but also cyclic CMP.
