Abstract Molecular compound formation between metal halides and oxygencontaining compounds has often been considered as a consequence of metal to oxygen bonding. The complexes SnCl 4 · 2 POCl 3 and TiCl 4 · 2 POCl 3 have been investigated. Data are presented which suggest complete dissociation of these compounds in the vapour phase. Equilibrium data on the dissociation of these molecules are discussed along with data on the molar volumes and other physical properties. It is concluded that metal to oxygen bonding cannot be held responsible for the formation of the complexes under consideration.
