Magnetorheological finishing and magnetorheological fluid: principle and research situation

As a magnetorheological finishing(MRF) tool, magnetorheological finishing fluid(MRF fluid)is one of its core technologies. The paper elaborated advantages and working mechanism of MRF, and then the present situation and research fields were analyzed. Two-phase particles dispersions and characterization, rheological properties of suspensions with and without magnetic field, analysis of forces on particles were reviewed and summarized. Physical and chemical interactions between MRF fluid and workpiece surface during finishing process and their coupling mechanism were analyzed particularly. Three basic problems of researching MRF fluid as a kind of smart material and developing tendency were proposed and then the research technical road map was established, which provides technical foundations for preparation and applications of MRF fluid.
