摘要
Lateral root (LR) development is a central determinant of root system architecture (RSA), enabling plants to optimize nutrient and water acquisition and adapt to heterogeneous soil environments. This developmental process is controlled by complex regulatory networks that integrate endogenous signaling pathways with environmental cues. Auxin functions as a core regulator of LR initiation, primordium formation, emergence, and developmental plasticity through dynamic interactions with multiple signaling systems. Although substantial progress has been made in elucidating the molecular basis of LR development, how these regulatory pathways are coordinated to shape adaptive root architecture remains incompletely understood. In this respect, we review recent advances in auxin-centered regulatory networks underlying LR development and discuss their interactions with emerging molecular and signaling pathways. In addition, we summarize current understanding of how environmental factors reshape LR plasticity and root architectural adaptation under both optimal and stress conditions. Finally, we highlight key unresolved questions and propose future perspectives for understanding the regulatory complexity of LR development and its potential applications in improving crop resilience and resource-use efficiency.
