The triangle mesh model with huge volume is not conducive to computer storage, analysis and rendering, and the mesh simplification method can effectively reduce the complexity of the triangle mesh model, but there are problems such as the loss of visual features and the degradation of mesh quality. For this reason, a triangle folding simplification method that can maintain visual features is proposed. First, the geometric error value is defined by combining the quadratic error metric and the feature constraint factor, which in turn determines the position of the new vertex. Then, Gaussian curvature and visual feature factor are used to define the visual importance of the triangle. Next, the error metric function for triangle folding is defined by combining the geometric error value and visual importance to characterize the folding cost. Finally, the triangles are sorted according to the folding cost and the folding simplification is accomplished according to the specified simplification rate. The experimental results show that the method can reduce the simplification error of the mesh model and generate high-quality simplified models while maintaining the visual characteristics of the model.
