From simple, neutral triatomic molecules to complex chemistry

The simple structures of neutral triatomic molecules mask the complexity of their many reactions. Several of them are involved with our life cycle, and an example of their importance is witnessed by the now recognized effect of CO(2) on our climate. In this tutorial review, we provide a basis for understanding why these triatomics react with other species, and show examples of how their chemistry has been exploited to synthesize complex molecules and aggregates, to change drastically the properties of materials, and to devise new processes.
