Territoriality in the Iron Age

The current world is shaped by territoriality. While territories are usually interpreted as political areas, territoriality is a broader concept concerned with a specific kind of spatial organization. Territories are defined as areas with sharp borders and are assigned to a certain entity. This paper reviews some approaches to investigating territoriality and presents two case studies: marked borders and interaction space. While linear fortifications represent marked borders in Jutland, no marked borders can be found in south-western Germany.
