摘要
Aviation industry enjoys rapid blooming during the past decade despite of the interruption of COVID pandemic. As a result, aviation fuel as the energy supply is in continued increasing demand. 1 However, conventional aviation fuel faces great challenges due to the global decarbonization regulatory pressures.Alternative renewable energy sources such as batteries or hydrogen are not feasible in the short term due to complicated modifications on infrastructures. Thus, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), made from non-petroleum feedstocks, is the most promising solution to meet the aviation energy need and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions due to its high energy density and drop-in nature. The European green fuels law for aviation mandates all flights departing from EU to have 6% SAF by 2030 and 70% SAF by 2050.The large demand on SAF production requires sufficient feedstocks.Biomass, defined as the organic matter derived from plants and animals, provides potential sustainable carbon sources for SAF as well as high value-added chemicals and co-products.The advancement of biomass to SAF technologies will play a central role in satisfying the future aviation energy needs and net-zerocarbon goal by 2050.
