Non-oxide materials are typically used in applications where high strength, toughness, or wear resistance are required because of their exceptional mechanical properties. Solid solutions of TiZrB2 and TiZrC were prepared in order to compare the mechanical properties of the end member constituents to the solid solutions. Powders were densified by pressureless sintering and hot pressing. The mechanical properties of the hot pressed solid solutions and end member compositions were measured. The solid solution materials generally exhibited mechanical properties different from and superior to the end member compositions.
