The Urban Residents' Social Inclusiveness toward Migrants: A Study of the Middle Class in Xiamen

Urban resident's attitude toward migrants is an intrinsic indicator of social inclusiveness. This paper focuses on the middle class' s social attitude toward migrants and their social inclusiveness based on a survey in 2013. A indicators system of social inclusiveness is constructed to analyze the characteristics of social inclusiveness of the middle class. It is found that middle class aregenerally with higher social inclusiveness toward the migrants. However different groups of middle class show differences in the attitudes toward the migrants. Generally speaking, margin middle class and old middle class show less social inclusiveness while new middle class and private entrepreneurs have more inclusive social attitude. The difference of attitudes is shaped by the social context and the embedded political and economic structure to make the different types of middle class.
