Objective To investigate the effect of chemical parathyroidectomy in chronic dialysis patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), which was discussed on the basis of advanced pathophysiology of SHPT. Methods 10 case of ESRD patients on chronic dialysis with SHPT were selected based on the crite-rion for chemical parathyroidectomy.Ultrasound guided injection of ethanol into 23 enlarged ( 1 cm in diam-eter) and ample blood supply parathyroid glands was performed. Results After chemical parathyroidectomy, iPTH of the 10 patients reduced from 1098. 1 ± 567. 3 pg/ml to 550. 5 ± 515. pg/ml (P 0. 001). Serum AKP decreased also significantly (P 0. 01) Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy was observed in 1 case. Conclusions This study indicated that chemical parathyroidectomy is an effective and safe therapy for patients with severe SHPT.
