The goal is to incorporate layers with producible thicknesses and refractive indices into an optical coating such that prescribed characteristics are met. These characteristics include the spectral radiant reflectance R, radiant transmittance T, and differential phase shift upon reflection Δ. In the global search mode,1 the computer selects the layer thicknesses and refractive indices needed to produce the desideratum. The foregoing process is often exceedingly consumptive of computer time. For that reason, a more widely used approach is that a starting design is fed to a computer code that improves it through optimization.
