Weld heat affected zone (HAZ) commonly deteriorates the mechanical properties of the weldment and structures due to its brittle microstructure and poor mechanical property caused by various metallurgical phenomena and thermal stress during welding process. Especially, liquation in the weld HAZ has the closest effect on the hot cracking, so it is very important to understand and prevent the liquation behavior in the weld HAZ. Many researchers have investigated about liquation behavior in the weld HAZ and hot cracking throughout the various kind of materials and several different mechanisms about liquation cracking for different cases have been reported. This study summarizes and generalizes mechanisms of liquation behavior, and recommends some remedies for preventing or reducing the degree of liquation in the weld HAZ.
