Abstract Avacincaptad pegol (IZERVAY™; formerly Zimura®) is a complement C5 inhibitor that is being developed by IVERIC Bio, an Astellas company, for the treatment of geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration. Avacincaptad pegol recently received approval for the treatment of adults with geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration. This article summarizes the milestones in the development of avacincaptad pegol leading to this first approval for geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration.
