Medical waste management at all levels of medical institutions in Anhui Province

Aim To learn about medical waste treatment status in all levels of medical institutions in Anhui province,so as to provide a solution for standardize medical waste treatment.Methods An unified questionnaire was designed.Stratified analysis was performed.In three consecutive years from 2007 to 2009,management of medical waste treatment at all levels of medical institutions in Anhui Province was investigated.Results The overall pass rate rose in the indexes for medical waste management and treatment from 2007 to 2009.In 2009,the indexes included the establishment of organizations,systems-establishing,personnel training,standardized registration and according to the requirements of packaging,storage,separate collection and centralized treatment,the qualified rate was 90.30%,75.97%,77.99%,88.41%,26.55%,19.09%,38.01% and 22.41%,respectively.The pass rates of the indexes for the medical waste management were better than the indexes of medical waste disposal at all levels of medical institutions.In general,the rate of centralized disposal of medical waste was not high,especially in township hospitals,community health service centers,the passing rates were only 9.67% and 29.02% in 2009.Conclusions Medical waste management needs to be standardized at all levels of medical institutions in Anhui Province.Packaging,storage and other part of medical waste treatment need to be further refined and improved.The rate of centralized disposal of medical waste needs to be raised.
