Tests have shown that the circular piston principle, i.e., as in the Wankel motor, is not suitable to construction of a mechanical vacuum pump. Studies of the various possible types of circular piston designs have led finally to the development of the Trochoid pump. This is a pump with a rotating piston in the shape of a hypotrochoid. Pumps were constructed and built with 400 and 630 m3/h pumping speed. The first pumps were tested in the metallurgy, chemical industry, and vacuum meat packing industries. These are now being built on the production line. Larger pumps with pumping speeds up to 2000 m3/h are in design and construction. Features of the trochoid pump are total dynamic balance, extremely low noise level, smaller size than other pumps with the same free air capacity, direct drive, no gears or belts, self-venting, and very large oil capacity.
