This paper experimentally examines the effect of radiation flux, distance between the sample and heat source and the radiation time on charring rate of charring material exposed to heat flux at the early stage of fire. The process of charring is recorded by camera. The dependence of charring rate on influence factors can be obtained by analyzing the experimental results. Thus the empiristic formula obtained can be used to describe that the charring rate will increase with the increase of the radiation flux and the decrease of the distance between the samples.
