Prophylactic pancreatic stent placement to prevent pancreatitis after ERCP

Acute pancreatitis remains the most feared and common complication after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Intravenous hydration, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) prophylaxis, and pancreatic duct stents have been used to mitigate the risk of post-ERCP pancreatitis; however, the use of prophylactic pancreatic duct stents is not uniformly recommended except in high-risk patients.1
