Numerical Simulation of Mechanical Behaviors of Ellipsoid Granular Materials by Discrete Element Method

Quasi-static shear deformation of two-dimensional granular arrays is carried out by using discrete element method(DEM).Macro average stress in the granular assembly is computed based on the linkage between the discrete force system and its continuum equivalent.The contributions of the normal and tangential contact force to the stress tensor are considered respectively.The inter-particle coefficient and the particle shape on the microscopic and macroscopic responses are discussed.The simulation results show that the mechanical properties of granular assemblies are significantly influenced by the shapes and surface characteristics of the individual particles.
