On the Translation of Figures of Speech in English News Publications

Figurative speech is widely used in literary writings as well as in English news reporting. However, compared with the researches in literary writings in this regard, which outnumber the latter, and are better conducted, the figurative speech in English news reporting is poorly valued and little explored. In fact, the figurative speech in English and Chinese bears similarities and differences. This paper is intended to make a comparison between the figurative images in both languages. Based on this, the author attempts to offer different approaches to the figurative images in translation, i.e. retain figurative image, substitute figurative images, and omit images.
