From thermodynamic data, electromotive forces have been calculated for reversible galvanic cells of the type where M is a metallic element in the solid, liquid, or gaseous state and is the corresponding chloride in the solid or liquid state. Results are given for temperatures from 25° to 1500°C. The chlorides are listed in a series and compared with the electromotive force series of the elements in aqueous solutions. Comparisons are given with results obtained from galvanic cells with fused chlorides or from measurements of decomposition voltages.
