摘要
Lignin, a complex aromatic biopolymer that accounts for 15–30% of lignocellulosic biomass, is an underutilized yet interesting feedstock in the bioeconomy. Lignin, nature’s most abundant aromatic polymer, must be valued if the lignocellulosic biorefinery concept is to be viable on both an economic and environmental level. Notwithstanding its abundance and structural diversity, lignin valorization remains a major challenge due to its heterogeneity, resistance, and lack of efficient depolymerization and upgrading methods. New, catalytic, biological, and hybrid techniques for depolymerizing lignin have demonstrated the ability to produce enhanced biomaterials, biofuels, and chemicals with additional value. Low selectivity, high energy consumption, catalyst deactivation, and scaling issues are some of the drawbacks of these methods. Notwithstanding these obstacles, the integration of lignin valorization through techno-economic and life cycle assessments to guarantee sustainability and market competitiveness bodes well for the lignin biorefinery’s future. Future research must concentrate on creating energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and selective conversion technologies that are aided by cutting-edge instruments like systems biology, machine learning, and high-throughput screening for microbial and catalyst engineering. Designing integrated lignin biorefineries that combine lignin valorization with carbohydrate-based processes will maximize the overall biomass utilization. Additionally, lignin valorization from the lab to the commercial scale will be accelerated by policy frameworks, industry-academia partnerships, and bio-based product standards. Advances in catalytic sciences, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology could make lignin a key component of the circular bioeconomy, transforming it from a low-value byproduct.
