摘要
Lubrication of non-ionic surfactant stabilised oil-in-water emulsions are examined in soft contact tribology. Surfactants assemble at the hydrophobic substrates, which facilitates the aqueous phase filling the contact and determining the friction in the EHL regime regardless of viscosity ratio between phases. However, as speed is lowered and emulsions confined to narrow length scales in the boundary-mixed regimes, local phase separation occurs at some ‘critical’ speed and friction is equivalent to that of the oil phase. Surprisingly, this critical value did not depend on drop size for smooth substrates, but decreased with increasing aqueous phase viscosity. However, for rough surfaces, oil droplets smaller than the roughness fail to plate out in the contact. The results highlight the role of surfactants in controlling three-phase dynamic contact angles, and the balance between stabilisation of emulsion in products and enabling oil to destabilise and fill the contact between soft substrates. With this being a desirable criterion in design for food and personal care applications, this study should provide underpinning knowledge to support studies on more complex and product-relevant emulsions.
