Over the past several decades, impression management (IM) research has flourished in the organizational sciences. As a result of these efforts, we now possess a good understanding of why and when employees engage in IM tactics and some of the consequences of these various image-altering behaviors for not only the actors themselves, but also for those with whom they work and for the organization in general. However, there is still much that is unknown about IM, particularly as it relates to when different types of IM contribute to organizational functioning versus when they detract from it. Therefore, the purpose of this symposium is to highlight research that may increase our understanding of the bright and dark sides of IM with regard to its organizational implications.
