Analysis of serum lipoprotein(a) reference range values in healthy adult population

BACKGROUND: Lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) is a type of lipoprotein containing apolipoprotein(a) protein attached to apolipoprotein B-100 on LDL. It has been determined that Lp(a) is a separate risk factor for cardiovascular illnesses such as heart attacks and strokes. There is evidence linking elevated levels of Lp(a) to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. High levels of Lp(a) have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The normal Lp(a) values range can vary significantly between individuals based on age and gender. This study aimed to determine the reference range Lp(a) values in a healthy young adult population.METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 120 healthy adults, including 60 males and 60 females with a mean age of 30 years, examined by the Immunoturbidimetric Assay method using the Cobas C311 device with a measurement range of 7-240 nmol/L. The lower limit measurement is blank limit = 6 nmol/L (95% probability), detection limit = 7 nmol/L, and quantity limit = 20 nmol/L.RESULTS: The study showed that the reference range value of serum Lp(a) in healthy young adults was 7.00-69.39 nmol/L, in men 7.00-71.63 nmol/L, and women 7.00-66.66 nmol/L.CONCLUSIONS: The reference range values for serum Lp(a) in healthy adults align with the reference ranges reported in other countries. These findings provide a relevant benchmark for evaluating cardiovascular risk in similar populations.
