Clinical analysis of herpers zoster in the patients with multiple myeloma

Objective To investigate the incidence, characteristcs, treatment and outcome of herpers zoster in the patients with multiple myeloma. Methods The clinical data of 15 cases of herpers zoster in the patients with multiple myeloma. Result Fifteen patients(11.3%)were found with herpers zoster out of 132 patients with multiple myeloma. The mean onset time was 102.5 days; The infection was commonly found in the skin of chest and waist back. The incidence of herpers zoster in the patients who were no less than 60 years was significantly higher than that of who less than 60 years (9.8% vs. 1.5%, P=0.004); The incidence was also significantly higher in patients who received Bortetzomib therapy than not(9.1% vs. 2.3%, p=0.004); With the treatment of acyclovir or arabinosyl adenine by intravenous infusion, most cases were cured within the average of 10 days. Only 1 case had postherpedic neuralgia. Conclusions Patients with multiple myeloma are more easily to be infected by herpes varicella-zoster virus(VZV). Age more than 60 and bortetzomib treatment history are high risk factors for VZV infection. Most patients could be cured by effective anti-virus therapy.
