Objective To observe the clinical efficacy, adverse reactions and safety of Suganjieyu capsules in treating mild and moderate-grade depression. Methods The randomized controlled trial was conducted in 60 patients of the treatment (Suganjieyu) group and 60 patients of the control (Citalopram) group. The therapeutic efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated before treatment and 14,28 and 42 days after treatment with scores by Hamilton depression scale (HAMD),Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA),clinical global impression (CGI),and treatment emergent symptoms scale (TESS),respectively. Results Suganjieyu capsule and Citalopram were both effective in treating depression, with the effective rates of 90% and 93.3%,respectively (P0.05).After the treatment, the scores of HAMD and HAMA were significantly lower than those before treatment (P0.01),and no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups (P0.05).The scores of TESS were significantly lower in treatment group than those in control group (P0.01),while the efficacy index of Suganjieyu capsule was significantly higher than that of citalopram (P0.01).Conclusions Suganjieyu capsule in treating depression shows the efficacy corresponded to that of citalopram and with less adverse reaction.
