Modelling and control of PMSG based WECS: Evaluating the test bench results

The first step for integration of new electrical generators, power converters and control techniques in a wind energy conversion system (WECS) is to simulate them in a computer environment. The next step is to test on a test bench, ie a wind independent controlled test environment. A major challenge in developing the test bench for such application is to control the electric drive system used to emulate the wind turbine (WT) in order to accurately reproduce the variations imposed by wind speed similar to the actual operating conditions. Perhaps for this reason, some studies focus specifically on this machine control, without presenting important details of the emulated WECS. Hence, it is impossible to check if the test bench is actually representing the behavior of a real WECS in all its operating range. In this sense, this work aims to model and control a WECS based on permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and compare the simulation results with those obtained on a test bench. To this end, as the authors are still designing a test bench for this purpose, this comparison will be based on data and results presented in other research.
