The directions of the formation and development of the theory of chain reactions has been discussed. Мechanisms of straight and branched chain processes, conditions of inhibition and acceleration of chain reactions, features and criteria that characterize the chain mode of chemical processes has been described in the specific examples. The current state of the theory of chain processes has been analyzed. A brief description of the revealed chain processes occurring in the gas, liquid, amorphous and solid phases has been described.
