Tranilast (a new membrane stabilizing agent of mast cells) was used to treat 206 patients of bronchial asthma and 104 patients of allergic rhinitis. The effectiveness of tranilast was at least similar to disodium cromoglicate (DSCG). Peak expiatory fl w increrse in asthma tics of tranilast group was more satisfactory than that of the control (DSCG) group.
After tranilast, the sensitivity of skin to various allergens, blood histamine level, allergen-induced histamine release from basophils and serum IgE level were significantly reduced. It is concluded that tranilast is preferable to DSCG owing to its less side effect, better therapeutic result, and more convenient administration.
