In this paper, we propose a design of a dual-polarized reconfigurable metasurface using PIN diodes to control its reflection phase with 3-bit phase resolution. This reconfigurable metasurface consists of a receive layer, a balun feed layer, and a phase-shift layer. The operation frequency is a range of 3.3-3.8 GHz with a 50 ohm input impedance. Full wave simulations illustrate that the insertion losses are about 1.5-1.8dB at the operation frequency and convert both incident linear polarizations to cross polarizations. Our proposed reconfigurable metasurface antenna element using several PIN diodes to control its reflection phase effectively reduces the cost. This element can be used in future 5G low-cost antenna base stations.
