Environmental-Behavioral System Design: A Reflection on Integrating Environmental and Behavioral Design

Abstract When approaching issues in either environmental design or behavioral design, researchers invariably consider both environment and behavior. However, to date, academia still lacks a systematic theoretical perspective for viewing the relationship between environmental design and behavioral design. This article explores the characteristics of environmental and behavioral design and introduces a new domain named environmental-behavioral system design (EBSD). EBSD provides a conceptual framework for researchers and designers to envision a future where mutual aesthetics and confidence emerge among different environmental-behavioral systems. With such a framework, people in each environmental-behavioral system could live more authentically and meaningfully.
