It is shown that illumination affects the adsorption on semiconductors, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The activity of illuminated semiconductor interfaces is studied for the particular case in which two species compete for the photogenerated charge carriers. It is concluded that, if charge transfer to only one of the species is desired, there exists an optimum level of doping of the semiconductor. The model is qualitatively illustrated by means of experimental results.
