摘要
Hydraulic systems of various types in use in locks on many American rivers and canals are described briefly, together with observations as to the manner in which they operate. The objectives of engineers engaged in lock design are stated and the important part played by the hydraulic laboratory as an aid in determining ways and means of improving the efficiency of lock-filling and lock-emptying systems is depicted. Some general criteria for guidance in design, based on results of comparatively recent prototype and model testing, together with examples of designs produced in conjunction with laboratory testing, are presented.
