Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content of raw shale oil and processed shale from the TOSCO II Process is tabulated. Results of tests on the carcinogenicity of shale oil and solid oil shale materials are discussed. It is concluded from results of chemical analyses and animal tests that shale oil presents a carcinogenic hazard that is similar to normal petroleum refinery streams, and that processed oil shale does not present a carcinogenic hazard.
