On the Sadness in Tao’s Poems

People paid little attention to sadness in Tao’s poems all along. As a matter of fact, under the general style of being pedestrian, Tao Yuan-ming’s poems have a great number of sad contents which include four classifications——sadness of life and death; sadness of having no opportunities to be successful; sadness of travelling and farewell; sadness of loneliness and sufferings. The readers neglect the existence of sadness because they are always attracted by Tao’s attitudes of trust in chance and easy feelings.
