This paper describes one of the CVCC combustion chamber configuration improvements which have been made to date. It is a higher compression ratio compact combustion chamber with bc (branched conduit) system for less fuel consumption. Namely, the combustion chamber is provided on its periphery with squish area so as to be compact in configuration, and the torch system is comprised of two torch passages, each being provided with a branched conduit. This combustion chamber configuration permits a substantial reduction of combustion period in the main chamber, thereby making it possible to achieve a high compression ratio, with occurrence of knocking controlled. The paper also describes discussions on and countermeasures against combustion noise, though it is not related to the engine performance and functions, generated in the high load range of a torch ignited engine with high compression ratio and small torch passage sectional area. The specific fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions of the higher compression ratio engine are also presented. (Author/TRRL)
