Intensity Noise of GaAlAs / GaAs Surface Emitting Laser

The relative intensity noise (RIN) of a vertical cavity surface emitting (SE) laser diode was measured for the first time. We found that the relative intensity noise was - 135 dB/Hz at the injection current 1.1× I th which is comparable to that of a low noise edge emitting laser.
