The behavior of solid C 60 under high pressure is simulated by tight-binding molecular dynamics. The simulation results show that the C 60 solid transforms to a diamond-like amorphous carbon phase when the C 60 cage structure collapses under high pressure. The optical absorption spectra obtained from our calculation are compared with experimental measurements. The structural and electronic properties of collapsed fullerene samples are presented and the relations between the electronic structure and local atomic configurations are discussed.
