Nonpharmacological Therapy in TCM for NSSI: Narrative Review

This article briefly introduces the definition of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and the corresponding TCM perspective, as well as the definition of nondrug treatment in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In particular, it focuses on the types of nondrug treatment in traditional Chinese medicine. These methods include the following: acupuncture therapy, massage therapy, TCM emotion–thought therapy, moxibustion and cupping, traditional exercise arts (Qigong, Tai Chi, Baduanjin), and dietary therapy (adjunctive nutritional support). These methods can be combined with Western medicine or Chinese medicine, which may be more conducive to the improvement of NSSI. It is also possible to use Chinese medicine nonpharmacological treatment in combination. This can better improve or treat NSSI. However, this treatment is not directly aimed at NSSI, but rather indirectly treats NSSI by improving mood and regulating the functions of internal organs.
