To find out whether atrial fibrillation(AF) leads to intracellular calcium overload in atrial myocytes, intracellular free calcium concentration in acute isolated atrial myocytes of rheumantic heart disease(RHD) patients with AF and with sinus rhythm was measured with laser scanning cofocal microscopy technique using the fluoresent Ca 2+ indicator Fluo 3.Result:Intracellular free calcium concentration of patients with AF was significantly higher than that of patients with sinus rhythm(517±98 vs 262±65 nmol/L, P 0.01).Conclution:Chronic AF could lead to intracellular calcium overload in atrial myocytes of human.
