Abstract Background In recent years, ferroptosis has gradually become the focus of research. Although existing studies have demonstrated that inhibition of ferroptosis can improve the progression of atherosclerosis, no researchers have conducted a bibliometric analysis in this field. Objective This article analyses the research trend of ferroptosis in atherosclerosis. This will be conducive to deepening the understanding of ferroptosis and also provide valuable references for future research in this field. Methods This study used the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI EXPANDED) of the Web of Science core database, and ‘ferroptosis’ and ‘atherosclerosis’ as the themes were searched. The retrieval period was from January 2015 to December 2024, and the literature type was ‘Article (Review Article)’. The VOSviewer software and CiteSpace software were used to conduct visual analysis and cluster analysis on the author, institution, country, journal, and keyword in this paper. Results The 274 articles include 1774 authors, 363 institutions, 32 countries, 153 journals, and 1212 keywords. Among these authors, Zhang, Jing published the largest number of articles and had the closest cooperation. Among these institutions, Harbin Medical University published the largest number of articles. Sun Yat-Sen University had the closest cooperation. Among these countries, China published the largest number of articles, and the USA had the closest cooperation. Among these journals, Biomedicine & pharmacotherapy published the largest number of articles, and Free radical biology and medicine had the closest cooperation. Among these keywords, ferroptosis had the highest occurrence frequency and co-occurrence intensity.
